Self drive car rental in Nepal is for travellers who already know where they want to go and don't want to negotiate that with a driver. You set the departure time, the lunch stop, and the pace. Purple Cars handles the vehicle, the insurance, and the paperwork — so the only thing left is the road.
Every rental comes with comprehensive insurance, 24/7 roadside support, and a full-to-full fuel policy. No surprise charges at drop-off. Car rental in Nepal doesn't have to be complicated; this is what it looks like when it isn't.
The rules are straightforward. Meet these, and you're good to go.
Required for all foreign nationals. Carry it alongside your original home-country licence — both documents together. An IDP issued by your home country's motoring authority is valid; one printed off the internet is not.
Must be valid and ideally held for at least one year. If your licence is not in English, the IDP translation is what police checkpoints will read.
21 and over, with a year's licence behind you. The 4x4s and the 12-seat Hiace start at 23 because of the routes they're built for. There's no upper age limit.
A minimum of one year behind the wheel is standard. Two or more years is preferred for mountain routes.
All nationalities are welcome. Indian licence holders may drive with their original licence; an IDP is still recommended for smoother checkpoint interactions.
A hatchback as your self-drive car in Kathmandu, an SUV for the hills, a 4x4 for everything else. All cars are clean, regularly serviced, and delivered with a full tank.

Most of Nepal's main tourist routes are open for self-drive car rent in Nepal. Here's where the roads actually go.

Bhaktapur, Patan, Nagarkot, Dhulikhel, Bungamati. A day's driving covers more than most guided tours do in three.
200 km along the Prithvi Highway. Paved, scenic, roughly 6–7 hours at a relaxed pace with stops.
150 km south through the Terai foothills. Flat highway driving once you're off the hills.
100 km west across the Terai plains. Straightforward highway, good road surface.
A short climb off the Prithvi Highway that most drivers miss. Worth the extra hour.
Kathmandu to the Tibet border — scenic and increasingly popular. Road quality varies; a compact SUV handles it fine in dry season.
Kathmandu → Pokhara → Chitwan → Lumbini → back. A week gives you enough time to do it without rushing.
Use this as a planning guide — the ranges are the all-in daily rates of the cars we recommend for each route. Final availability depends on your dates and the season.
| Route / duration | Recommended car | Daily rate |
|---|---|---|
| Kathmandu city day (1 day) | Swift or Creta | NPR 4,500–6,500 |

Rentals of a week or more move to a lower daily rate automatically — see long-term rentals.
Yes, if you're a foreign national. You need your IDP alongside your original home-country licence. Both documents are required at police checkpoints and at pickup. Indian nationals may use their original licence, but carrying an IDP is still advisable.
No. The vehicle cannot cross Nepal's international borders. The rental is valid within Nepal only. Attempting a border crossing with a rental vehicle will void your insurance and may result in the vehicle being impounded.
Call our 24/7 support line immediately — the number is on the keyring and in your booking. Comprehensive insurance is included in every rental: document the scene, don't move the vehicle until instructed, and we'll walk you through the next steps. The walk-around at pickup is your protection against being charged for pre-existing damage.
No. There's no deposit and no counter — you pay when the car arrives at your door, and cancellation is free up to two hours before delivery. The only things that can be added to a bill afterwards are fuel you haven't replaced, a late return, or damage up to the insurance excess.
Yes, free of charge. One-way drops between Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini carry no repositioning fee — drive one way, fly the other. Tell us the drop-off city when you book.
Yes. The Swift, Creta and Atto 3 are automatic; the Hiace is manual. If automatic is essential for a 4x4, specify this when you book so we can confirm availability for your dates.
Upper Mustang beyond Kagbeni, Manang's restricted valleys and other restricted Himalayan zones require a licensed driver and special government permits — self-drive is not allowed there. Some high-altitude seasonal roads (above 4,000 m) may also be restricted depending on conditions and time of year. Ask us about your specific route before finalising your itinerary.
Yes. If part of your route passes through a restricted zone or you'd simply prefer a driver for a mountain leg, we can arrange that. You self-drive the open sections and hand over for the restricted ones. This is a common setup for travellers combining the Pokhara region with a Mustang excursion.
Hand over the wheel for a mountain leg or the whole trip — added per day to any car.
One flat fee to or from Tribhuvan, Pokhara International or Bharatpur.
Weekly and monthly bookings at a lower daily rate, one invoice a month.
Reserve any car for your dates and tell us where to bring it. No deposit, and free cancellation up to two hours before delivery.
